What Makes Invisalign® Faster than Braces?

It’s widely agreed that Invisalign® produces a better experience for patients than traditional metal braces, but we have now determined that it is often even more efficient and effective as well. When Dr. Hickory first began using Invisalign® 14 years ago, it was considered to be less effective than braces; however, we were still thrilled to offer it as an alternative option for adults not wishing to wear braces. Although a little extra time and effort was often needed to achieve optimal results with Invisalign®, we were typically able to make it work.

Throughout the past decade, technical product improvements combined with an increase in doctor experience has dramatically increased the efficacy of Invisalign®. In fact, Dr. Hickory has treated upwards of 4,000 patients with Invisalign® (making him the largest user in the United States) and currently uses the innovative teeth straightening system for almost every patient to help ensure effective and predictable results.

Due to his unprecedented level of experience, Invisalign® Korea recently invited Dr. Hickory to lecture to orthodontists and dentists in Gangnam, Seoul. While there, one of the focuses of his lecture included 16 reasons why Invisalign® is now considered to be faster and more efficient than traditional braces. Since this concept has gradually evolved over the last 10 years, many dentists and orthodontists are either unaware, or in some cases, in denial about the transformation.

Some key reasons to back this claim include a shorter overall treatment process, fewer office visits, and no repair visits. Additionally, the patient’s teeth are digitally scanned to generate a computer model that will showcase movements all at the same time through a process known as simultaneous staging. As opposed to staging movements with different wire flexibilities during treatment with traditional braces, simultaneous staging for Invisalign® can reduce treatment times by roughly 30 to 50%. Braces also commonly produce side-effects that need to be addressed following the finishing stage of treatment, while Invisalign® generally does not.

Sustained contact with the entire surface of the tooth is also a significant benefit of Invisalign®. Due to their single point of contact on each tooth, brackets of traditional braces can have the tendency to essentially “tip” the tooth ever so slightly. While we do have access these days to computer driven systems designed to bend wires for braces, Align Technology has hundreds of technicians working every day to maximize the benefits of Invisalign®.

Ultimately, Dr. Hickory often says that for him, “Braces are like using a typewriter whereas Invisalign® is like using a word processor.”
