The Benefits of Orthodontics

3 Key Benefits of Orthodontics

The field of orthodontics has advanced tremendously in recent years. Now, patients have a variety of treatment options available to them, ranging from traditional braces to lingual braces to clear aligners. But how do you determine whether you should invest in orthodontic care or not? To help you make a more informed decision about your dental health, we have compiled a list of the key benefits orthodontic treatment provides.

Key Benefits of Orthodontics

Benefit 1: A More Radiant Smile

The most noticeable advantage of undergoing orthodontic treatment is the improved appearance of your smile. Straighter teeth and a more attractive smile provide a boost in self-esteem and confidence, which often helps a person’s professional and personal success. Whether you’re on a date or at job interview, a beautiful smile will leave a positive impression on those around you.

Benefit 2: Greater Dental Stability

There is a direct correlation between the straightness and stability of your teeth. The straighter they are, the greater their long-term stability. Unfortunately, this correlation also means that untreated orthodontic problems tend to exacerbate over time. In particular, crowding occurs when teeth aren’t locking in their space and back teeth begin to drift forward. Once teeth slip contact with each other, the door is open for crowding to worsen. If the crowding progresses too far, there may no longer be enough room for all the teeth. Consequentially, one or more teeth may need to be extracted. Naturally, the sooner crowding is corrected, the easier the process will be.

Benefit 3: Long-Term Periodontal Health

Finally, it has been shown that straight teeth are less prone to developing periodontal (gum) problems. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and offer little to no room for food particles to get trapped. This reduces the likelihood of plaque and tartar build-up, which often leads to gingivitis, gum recession, and gum disease.

If you’re looking to get a professional opinion on different treatment options, we encourage you to contact us to schedule a complimentary consultation. We will perform a digital scan of your mouth, share the results with you, and put together a treatment plan customized specifically to your needs.

Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Have you ever wondered whether you need orthodontic treatment or not?

Maybe you’re feeling self-conscious about your bite or the alignment of your teeth. Even if your teeth are straight, you may have underlying issues such as discomfort or pain when you chew. There are many reasons why you might be looking into different orthodontic treatment options. As a DC-based orthodontist with over 25 years of experience in the field, I’ve treated tens of thousands of patients and seen many types of cases. Here are some of the most common reasons why I believe people go to their orthodontist for a professional evaluation.

Aesthetics and Confidence

Oftentimes, crowding, spacing, and protrusion make people feel insecure about their teeth. They are embarrassed to smile in photographs and in front of others. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can help correct these aesthetic imperfections and give you the confidence and pride that come with straight teeth and a great smile.

Orthodontic Relapse

Many of the patients that come to our practice had braces as children. Unfortunately, teeth have a natural tendency to return to their original positions if retainers are not diligently worn. Orthodontic relapse is a condition where teeth slowly fall out of alignment following treatment. This usually compels people to return to a practice for another round of orthodontic treatment to correct it. At Embassy Row Orthodontics, we make sure that after our patients have finished their treatment, they understand the importance of wearing retainers to minimize the risk of relapse. We also help patients create healthy dental habits and give them valuable tips on how to maintain their new beautiful smile.

Pain, Tooth Decay, and Gum Disease

Due to misalignment, teeth can overlap and create tight spaces that are hard for toothbrushes and floss to reach. Consequentially, plaque and bacteria can accumulate, leading to dental problems like tooth decay, gum recession, and gum disease. Through proper orthodontic treatment, your teeth will be spaced and aligned correctly, allowing you to brush and floss your teeth more effectively. In addition, there will be less stress and wear on your teeth and on your jaw joints (TMJ).

Early Treatment

Since most orthodontic problems can now be treated with Invisalign, adults and children of all ages are finding orthodontic treatment is easier than they had ever imagined. For children, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a consultation at age 7. Some children, typically in the 7 to 9 year-old age range, benefit from an early phase of orthodontics while there are still primary (baby) teeth. If there is crowding, space can be made to allow for the normal eruption of teeth. If there is a jaw relation problem (such as crossbite, overbite, under-bite, open bite or deep bite) orthopedic appliances can be used to harmonize jaw growth. We encourage early screening visits to address orthodontic problems before they worsen.

To learn more about whether orthodontic treatment is right for you or your child, contact us to schedule a complimentary consultation appointment. We will perform a digital 3-D scan of your mouth, share the results with you, and if appropriate, put together a treatment plan customized specifically to your needs.

Washington, DC Orthodontist Explains the Cost of Invisalign®

orthodontist-in-washington-dc-reveals-cost-of-invisalignDr. Wayne Hickory discusses the cost of Invisalign® teeth aligners, a discreet and removable alternative to traditional metal braces.

Washington, DC — Orthodontist Wayne Hickory, DMD, says Invisalign® orthodontic treatments are some of the most highly requested procedures at his practices, Embassy Row Orthodontics and Bethesda Dental Specialties. Invisalign® is a system of removable, clear teeth aligners designed to straighten the teeth in a more discreet way. In a recent blog post on Embassy Row’s website titled “How Much Does Invisalign® Cost?”, the Washington, DC orthodontist explains some of the factors that go into the cost of this popular treatment.

Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign® uses a series of clear plastic aligners that are slightly modified from the set that comes before it. This allows for gradual movement of the teeth into a more desirable position. The whole process usually takes less than a year for optimal results; however, with some patients, a longer treatment time may be required. Dr. Hickory says, since each patient’s orthodontic needs are unique, the cost of Invisalign® will vary depending on the total number of aligners used and the overall treatment length.

Dr. Hickory says patients can often choose from a variety of options to help bring the cost of Invisalign® into their budget. His practice accepts most Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) insurance plans and offers other financing options, including:

  • Pre-Payment Discount – If the patients pay their full amount in one lump sum they can receive a discount.
  • Third-Party Financing – CareCredit® healthcare financing is available for qualified applicants.
  • Multiple Treatment Discount – Patients can receive a discount if their immediate family members decide to receive Invisalign® or Invisalign Teen® treatment.
  • Customized Payment Plan – The practice can develop a monthly payment plan according to the patient’s financial needs and budget.

A patient coordinator is available to review a patient’s payment options in more detail after a complimentary consultation and teeth evaluation, says Dr. Hickory. During the consultation, the orthodontist will perform a comprehensive examination and explain all aspects of the Invisalign® procedure. The patient coordinator will then tally the patient’s estimated fee amount based on Dr. Hickory’s oral assessment.

Dr. Hickory believes the advantages from using Invisalign® far outweigh the treatment’s expense. He recommends patients visit a reputable orthodontist to evaluate their teeth and receive a professional opinion on whether Invisalign® is an appropriate treatment option for their smile.

Dr. Hickory has been among the world’s largest practitioners of Invisalign® and gives national and international lectures on the orthodontic treatment.

Washington, DC Orthodontist Returns from Giving Invisalign® Lecture in Asia

orthodontist-in-washington-dc-recently-lectured-on-invisalign-in-south-koreaInvisalign® Korea recently invited Dr. Wayne Hickory to lecture in South Korea about the advantages of Invisalign® clear aligners for patients of all ages.

Washington, DC — Super Elite Invisalign® provider Wayne Hickory, DMD of Embassy Row Orthodontics recently returned from Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea where he presented a lecture series on Invisalign® to Invisalign® certified doctors in Korea. Similar to previous lectures he gave in both Hong Kong and Jakarta at the beginning of February, his presentation in South Korea focused on three main topics:

  • “Invisalign® for Early Phase Orthodontics (7 to 10 year-old patients)”
  • “Why Invisalign® is Now Faster and more Effective than Braces”
  • “Propel Orthodontics” (a system designed to accelerate the Invisalign® treatment)

A common theme stressed throughout the entirety of Dr. Hickory’s lecture series was the growing superiority Invisalign® has over traditional teeth straightening techniques. According to How Invisalign® Surpasses Braces for Children of All Ages, a blog post on the Embassy Row Orthodontics website, “In comparison to metal braces, Invisalign® provides several distinct benefits, including removable aligners, no broken brackets, and no poking wires. Additionally, difficulties with proper oral care can be reduced by removing the aligners while brushing and flossing.”

The blog entry goes on to say the Invisalign® treatment typically requires fewer visits to the orthodontist office for maintenance and repairs, and should the patient ever lose an aligner, he or she will typically be able to skip to the next custom aligner in the incremental series without experiencing any issues.

Upon his return to Washington, DC, Dr. Hickory said he was grateful for this opportunity to share his knowledge about Invisalign® in Asia, and he looks forward to continuing to lecture both nationally and internationally.

What Makes Invisalign® Faster than Braces?

It’s widely agreed that Invisalign® produces a better experience for patients than traditional metal braces, but we have now determined that it is often even more efficient and effective as well. When Dr. Hickory first began using Invisalign® 14 years ago, it was considered to be less effective than braces; however, we were still thrilled to offer it as an alternative option for adults not wishing to wear braces. Although a little extra time and effort was often needed to achieve optimal results with Invisalign®, we were typically able to make it work.

Throughout the past decade, technical product improvements combined with an increase in doctor experience has dramatically increased the efficacy of Invisalign®. In fact, Dr. Hickory has treated upwards of 4,000 patients with Invisalign® (making him the largest user in the United States) and currently uses the innovative teeth straightening system for almost every patient to help ensure effective and predictable results.

Due to his unprecedented level of experience, Invisalign® Korea recently invited Dr. Hickory to lecture to orthodontists and dentists in Gangnam, Seoul. While there, one of the focuses of his lecture included 16 reasons why Invisalign® is now considered to be faster and more efficient than traditional braces. Since this concept has gradually evolved over the last 10 years, many dentists and orthodontists are either unaware, or in some cases, in denial about the transformation.

Some key reasons to back this claim include a shorter overall treatment process, fewer office visits, and no repair visits. Additionally, the patient’s teeth are digitally scanned to generate a computer model that will showcase movements all at the same time through a process known as simultaneous staging. As opposed to staging movements with different wire flexibilities during treatment with traditional braces, simultaneous staging for Invisalign® can reduce treatment times by roughly 30 to 50%. Braces also commonly produce side-effects that need to be addressed following the finishing stage of treatment, while Invisalign® generally does not.

Sustained contact with the entire surface of the tooth is also a significant benefit of Invisalign®. Due to their single point of contact on each tooth, brackets of traditional braces can have the tendency to essentially “tip” the tooth ever so slightly. While we do have access these days to computer driven systems designed to bend wires for braces, Align Technology has hundreds of technicians working every day to maximize the benefits of Invisalign®.

Ultimately, Dr. Hickory often says that for him, “Braces are like using a typewriter whereas Invisalign® is like using a word processor.”

Dr. Hickory Introduces the PROPEL System to Accelerate Orthodontic Treatment

washington-dc-orthodontist-offers-propel-to-enhance-invisalignOrthodontist in Washington, DC has recently added the PROPEL orthodontic system to his treatment repertoire in order to accelerate care and enhance results

Washington, D.C. — Dr. Wayne Hickory, an Invisalign® Super Elite Provider, is one of the first orthodontists to use the PROPEL system at his practices in Washington DC, Bethesda, and Ellicott City, Maryland. The PROPEL device works with all orthodontic systems, such as Invisalign® or braces, to reduce treatment time by up to 60%. Dr. Hickory met with Bryce Way, CEO of PROPEL Orthodontics, at the American Association of Orthodontists Meeting in Philadelphia to discuss use of the PROPEL system in his practices, as well as the use of the PROPEL system in Asia where Dr. Hickory distributes and consults on Invisalign®.

Orthodontic technology has historically focused on the mechanical systems that put gentle, yet precise forces on teeth to create desired tooth alignment. The PROPEL system focuses on the biological response. The Washington DC orthodontist is particularly interested in using the PROPEL device with Invisalign® to expand the types of treatment that can be accomplished with Invisalign®, and to treat an even broader range of patients. Dr. Hickory was one of America’s first orthodontists to use Invisalign® 14 years ago and is regarded as one of America’s most experienced Invisalign® orthodontists.

The PROPEL system is a five minute procedure that makes a small, virtually painless puncture in the bone where accelerated tooth movement is desired. The device and the procedure are related to research that was performed at NYU College of Dentistry.

“The future of orthodontics is merging new digital orthodontic technology with more control of the biological response. I believe every orthodontic case can be treated with Invisalign®, and combining Invisalign® with the PROPEL device where indicated will make both treatments more effective and efficient,” says Dr. Hickory.
